Delaware is a strange state. There are little Easter eggs of things to do hiding in the strangest places. Wilmington might seem like a strange place to hang out. People who have only ever been to the more run-down parts of the city will think you’re crazy if you tell them you spent an entire evening there. But the Wilmington Riverfront is neither run-down nor strange. It is a beautiful place to be in our small state. This weekend, I had the opportunity to go to the Riverfront Beer Garden – Constitution Yards, as it formally named.
Honestly, this place is amazing. I’m not normally one to go to places like this, but my fiancé and his friend invited me to tag along to celebrate my fiancé’s last day of working at his part-time job. You might think a “beer garden” is only fun if you can drink. Well, I went as his designated driver, but it was still so much fun!
This is what the beer garden looks like from the front sidewalk. It was a little cloudy on this day, but the place was still breathtaking. They have pingpong lights strung up everywhere to create ambiance for the nighttime, and it gets really pretty when it’s dark out. The aesthetic for this place is pretty rustic with a modern twist. They hollow out those storage tanks you’re seeing, and they put chairs inside of them so that you can sit inside if it rains or if you just want a break from the sun and wind.
Although it is the main attraction, drinking isn’t the only thing you can do at the beer garden. In fact, they encourage you to play around while you have a drink. There are a bunch of different games set up around this place; there’s corn-hole, bocce (BAH-chee), giant Jenga, and badminton. There are also a couple of giant “sandboxes” in which you can make sandcastles (they even provide the supplies). I saw a bunch of little kids there just playing in the sand, which proves that you don’t have to drink to have fun at this place!
Of course, because my friends and I were there to celebrate my fiancé, there was a little bit of drinking. This place has a large selection of new craft beers, and they’re constantly updating it. Ben had a sour beer (which I didn’t even know existed) from Dogfish Head that was really good! And of course, we played badminton, bocce, and Jenga (which I won, by the way). And then we just sat around talking. It was honestly a lot of fun.
Constitution Yards is a really fun place. If you haven’t been there (or to the Riverfront in general, for that matter), I would definitely suggest going. You can even take the kids and make a day of all of the Riverfront fun!
